Puppetry 1

Age 7-9

Naturals in the realm of imagination children are often drawn to puppets. Whether it’s their ability to be larger than life, or their broad comedic stylings, children and puppets speak the same language. In this introductory class, the students will learn the fundamentals of manipulation, expression and storytelling through their puppets. They will be able to create their own as well as work with some more advanced puppets we have at our school. They will be encouraged to let their imaginations soar and to tell their own stories in new creative ways.

Puppetry 2

Age 10-12

Wednesday 5-6pm

Puppets offer children the ability to speak through a character other than themselves. In this way, they can often access parts of themselves or abilities they were unaware they even had. In this class along with puppetry, the students will delve quickly into the realm of mask work as well. The students will learn multiple forms of puppetry and expand their knowledge of the art. Through this, the students can improve their storytelling abilities while learning about themselves along the way.

Age 13-17

While seemingly straightforward, the world of puppetry is incredibly vast. In this advanced class, students will learn the history of puppetry and all of the tenets of its practice. From shadow puppetry to object theatre our students will explore the different forms of puppetry and all their points of articulation. They will then choose one and engage in an individual project in which they will design their own story, puppets and set. They will learn to take a puppet show from inception to performance and all the exciting steps along the way.
